Toates This is a fascinating piece of detective work by a clinical psychologist with an expertise in sex and in particular S and M, who analysed the endless repetition of certain words and ideas in Proust’s work. Charlayne Grenci probes below the surface of Proust’s writing to show the ever-present theme of sado-masochistic relationships. This seems so far to have evaded Proust biographers and scholars, except in so far as they detected the more obvious S and M themes, such as flogging. Charlayne argues that Proust should stand as the preeminent writer on sado-masochism of the 20th Century. Furthermore, the author argues, I think convincingly, that Proust’s works reveal his own sexual desires, hypersexuality and sexual ‘addiction’, which he might, or more likely might not, have been able to express in his actual behaviour. Proust might well have felt that his sexual deviations would remain hidden. He appears to have had a range of so-called ‘paraphilias’, deviations from the sexual norm. Charlayne presents evidence for Proust’s sexual impotence, surely a source of still more anxiety and frustration. Drugs and sex, even if the latter was only in his imagination and writing, were used to soothe the mental anguish of this outstandingly creative but physically and psychologically handicapped individual. A very good book, which should be on the reading list of every Proust scholar.Frederick Toates, author of ‘How Sexual Desire Works: The Enigmatic Urge’.

By Kent Halloran A detailed and thought provoking psychological examination of one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Yet, in spite of the academic nature of this work, the author is able to convey her findings in language suitable for all interested readers. It is clear that Dr. Grenci has an in depth knowledge of her subject matter.
