Hailed by ESPN as the world’s most famous female basketball player, Brittney Griner, the dunking phenom and national sensation who is shattering stereotypes and breaking boundaries, now shares her coming-of-age story, revealing how she found her strength to overcome bullies and to embrace her authentic self.

Brittney Griner, the No. 1 pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, is a once-in-a-generation player, possessing a combination of size and athleticism never before seen in the women’s game. But “the sport’s most transformative figure” (Sports Illustrated) is equally famous for making headlines off the court, for speaking out on issues of gender, sexuality, body image and self-esteem.

At 6’8”, with an 88-inch wingspan and a size 17 shoe (men’s), the Phoenix Mercury star has heard every vicious insult in the book, enduring years of taunting that began in middle school and continues to this day. Through the highs and lows, Griner has learned to remain true to herself, rising above the haters trying to take her down.

In her heartfelt memoir, she reflects on painful episodes in her life and describes how she came to celebrate what makes her unique—inspiring lessons she now shares. Filled with all the humor and personality Griner has become known for, In My Skin is more than a glimpse into one of the most original personalities in sports; it’s also a powerful call to readers to be true to themselves, to love who they are on the inside and out.

We introduced all three of our grandchildren to basketball, through the Lady Bears. NO one, we knew, knew she was in so much emotional pain. She gave us so much enjoyment, every time she played. We continued to watch her play when she played on tv. Even buying an extra sports package to watch her games, on tv. We plan to do the same this summer. Our family wishes her only the best life has to offer and by telling HER story, she has possibly opened an avenue of communication with other gay children with their family, friends, educators and other members of society.Baylor and Waco would have been the losers, if Brittney Griner had not played here. Now, they can have had their eyes opened to the pain they caused this talented young woman and will not let this type of prejudice happen again.Excellent writing.

Seeing your struggle only made me relive some of the hardship I endured growing up trying to discover who I really was. Glad you were able to come to terms with it and okay with being the person you are.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read. Couldn't put it down. By kc Johnson Everyone has a truth. "In My Skin" is Brittney Griner's truth. She simply shares her story the way she has experienced it thus far. It is a glimpse into the life of a young woman who stands out not just because of her size, but ultimately because of her courage, talent and personality. It is an easy read. A captivating read, that makes the reader feel as if they are stealing a glance at a young girl's diary as stories unfold re. family dynamics and the emotional highs and lows of adolescence. Brittney's story is no different from any young person who is struggling to find acceptance, respect & a sense of self worth. However, HER journey takes place under the glaring lights of the public.I am a mom, and my daughter attended Baylor University during the time Brittney was a student. I laughed when I read an excerpt about the day Brittney moved on campus her Freshman year. She spoke of how her parents unloaded boxes and possessions, then lingered around as if trying to put off the inevitable final goodbye, while she struggled to contain her excitement at the first taste of parental freedom. That was our family as well. And as a mom, I cringed when I followed the Baylor Lady Bears and watched Brittney get elbowed, grabbed, & have hands shoved in her face, as if her height somehow negated the need to call fouls on opposing players. I admired her focus & restraint, and especially enjoyed her on camera interviews. I've never met her, but she came across as playful, fun and a bit vulnerable. I always felt she represented Baylor well, and still do.Everybody has a truth. This is Brittney's. This is her life, as experienced through her eyes. It is filled with emotion & humor & honesty. Miss Griner is quick to take responsibility for negative incidents that she could have handled differently, and deeply candid about the emotional pain she has experienced through the actions of others. Her story is interesting & touching & positive. She is much more than Brittney Griner the female-basketball-phenom. She is a beautiful, successful, engaging young woman who despite the criticism of others has learned to be true to herself. I enjoyed her story. I hope her honesty will encourage others to stay positive, push forward, and live their truth.
