"Despite the brevity of the actual meeting with House, this short book, at 70 pages, is an enjoyable read, engagingly written and which I devoured at one sitting!" -Mike Garner, Blues.nz http://blues.nz/2015/08/finding-son-house/

Eddie J. “Son” House was the blues personified. The degree of his obscurity, contrasted with the lasting and far-reaching effect of his musical influence, is probably unequaled by any other artist in any art form. It just so happened that the “locals” he was content to play for included two teenagers, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, who would carry his musical style to future generations worldwide.

Blues radio program host Richard Shade Gardner was intrigued by Son House’s lifelong fight with personal demons through cotton fields, churches, pulpits, prison, juke joints, and working for the New York Central Railroad in Rochester, New York. In 1981, he finally caught up with the legendary octogenarian in Detroit.

He is a blogger for the Rochester newspaper where I live, I've read 'Learning to Walk' by him and I just like his writing style. This book is another example of how much I enjoy whatever he writes. I too live in Corn Hill, where Son lived for a period of his life, I've lived here for 22 years and never knew a thing about Son, or him living here. Now I do. While his music is not something I am drawn to, I appreciated reading about his live and what shaped his music. I also like the story of Richard meeting Son and how his music related to his own life.

By Ann Patrice Carrigan Ostensibly this fast and easy read profiles a meeting between the legendary Son House and the author. For me, it was a brief but intriguing literary work that shared much in common with novels where it is the "searcher" who is eventually revealed in the search. A wonderful read in which you are caught up in the intersections between a city that loves music, a man who breathes it and the enigma of Son House.

Never knew anything about Son and I have lived in Rochester all my life. Rich's last book, " Learning to Walk" was excellent also. I am waiting for Book 2 of the Trilogy. Rich has a wonderful way with words.

I was tired of playing it safe and having to tread water in the shallow end of life where no-one else felt threatened. I wanted to strike out and lose sight of shore. To swim in the deep end where the Wild Things roar. To grab life by the horns and stick a cattle prod up its ass and find out who was the better man! It's taken a lifetime of adventure and a world of pain to learn how to live and love without condition, but the essence of it came to me one day when revenge handed me the opportunity to crucify my best friend. I realized in that moment that who we are is not determined by fate, but rather our faith in the bigger hand that is playing our game. That while we are being played we have a choice; to become like the petty thieves and pirates who would see to our undoing, or confront ourselves and through courage and daring find a better way to end our story. Idealistic I know, but I have since discovered that it is the difference between a life well lived and one that is wasted on false gods and missed opportunities. I started my journey around the world as a philosopher and a seeker of truth guided by the ultimate question that haunts most parents; 'what do I tell my children?' On my quest I have climbed from the pits of despair to the pinnacles of success and the fallen all the way down again. Unexpectedly, I would find the answer to my question by going through hell. I might still be there now, if it had not been for her beautiful smile and tropical brown eyes that whispered "what if?" but ultimately it was her courage that saved me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. compulsive reading By Riana I read Wild Rover in under a week. Lately, with a job and four young kids, reading anything is a treat and staying awake for more than 2 pages at a time is a miracle! But I couldn't put this book down. The characters became part of my daily thoughts. I was thinking about what would happen next when I was at work and was nearly divorced for keeping the light on too late at night. The bravery of the massive adventure the family undertakes is inspiring. What a fantastic memory for the children to have of their ocean voyage and the apparent creation of terrific bonds between them all. It makes you think, should we break free of the dull, hum drum lives we live, half in fear of change and break out and do something outside our comfort zone? When I had finished the book, I really missed the characters and wondered what had happened since. It was a real page turner. The way the book is written makes you feel as if you know the characters well. The language is relaxed and you are drawn in to the whole story. There are many highs and lows in the story and as a reader, I felt those emotions when they were supposed to be felt. Sometimes, it was hard not to be angry when the characters were being so badly treated but likewise, there were lots of feel-good moments toowhere one could only feel delighted or even sometimes relieved when things were going well. To some, the story may seem far fetched, especially life in the Middle East, but having lived there for 2 years, I am certain every word and more, is true. The frustrations and ineptitudes described in the book and the powerlessness of westerners there struck a chord and resurrected my old feelings of stress and anger.I look forward to more writing from Gary and his Muse!

By Alexander Smith Alex Smith (Leadership and change management)At half past midnight on 12th January I was up in a cold sweat working through in my mind how I would honour my own integrity and values and confront Gary Dennis with the fact that I could no longer be his patient, or indeed entertain any notion of friendship with a man who could do awful things to another. As ever, when faced with a “difficult conversation” I imagined myself saying what I needed to say. It was scary, heart racing stuff. Would I somehow become a victim in the next chapter of this extraordinary story? I was angry and a little scared. Next morning, just to be sure, I read a few more pages and found out that I had been "caught" by a great story! I'm still smiling about the whole “set up” and how he had “got me!!" He had got me, and not for the first time in the book, only this time it had been visceral. Wild Rover is an unexpectedly good read. I was hooked initially by an intense human connection with a man’s vulnerability and it’s power to create trust when shared, and shortly after by the promise of adventure at sea.Gary has shared stuff in this book that many of us would not dare to share, perhaps not even with our closest partners. It speaks often unspoken truths about our human nature. For me there was sufficient resonance with my own growing up, developing awareness of and acceptance of my flaws, to have me intrigued from the get go. I am not perfect, but had invested heavily in trying to show the world I was….and it ended in tears. So at one significant level this is a book that speaks about the liberation available when we find an authentic way of living, committed to living our own life not a life scripted by the expectations of others. The liberation is not an easy ride, but a life affirming one and that in large measure is what Wild Rover was for me. It made a real and deep connection.Several times I wanted to reach out, shake Gary and Darling and say, for God’s sake can’t you see how this is going to play out? STOP! Yet, despite the sequence of numerous harrowing events that unfold apace (and had me asking myself surely there can’t be more) a powerful pattern emerges for me. Trust. There are good people in the world and we can trust that if we commit to being one of them then we will attract the support we need when we need it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book grabbed me from the very first page By talesofjo I was hooked from the very first page. I stormed through the first six chapters when I should have been fast asleep. There were several more late nights after that as I sped through the highs and lows as the drama unfolded. I was shocked and relieved and shocked again. For me, Wild Rover was about surviving when you should have been thriving. Surviving thanks to a generous gift from a good friend who hung around to make sure that the gift was put to good effect. And no thanks to someone who wasn’t the friend he was first thought to be.The kindness of strangers amazed me again and again and the warmth of the friendships and partnerships that followed made the pagesglow. The stark contrast between the good work that the group of families did for Molly and her friends and the efforts that so many people went to in a bid to undermine this good work was startling.I give Wild Rover 4 out of 5 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure. Gary's writing style and language flow easily. The plot was just as compelling – rather surprising for real life rather than fiction. It reminds me of Shantaram in tone and that was one of the best books I've read in the last few years. To get 5 stars from me, the book would have had to be worthy of a Booker prize nomination, a work of literary genius. As it is, it got 4 stars because it really grabbed me even though I've hardly finished a book in the last few years because I don't have the patience for anything mediocre at the moment. As with all great books, I was disappointed to reach the end and eagerly await a sequel.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Read By Scot Reynolds I found the story entertaining. I shouldn't find a story about a mother that lost her children, to a genetic disease that affects infants world wide. However, this story was able to elicit all of the emotions, joy, sadness, anger, and discuss. The author, was able to portray emotions well with written descriptions. In addition, to bring out the best and worst with just words, and knowing what the ending actually was, relatively early in the story didn’t hinder my want to hear the rest of the story. It was able to keep my attention, and a surprise near the ending. It brings light, to much of the medical population not fully understanding the signs they use to diagnose. Much of the medical community is over worked, and only given minutes, to determine what is actually wrong with you, it’s understandable this happens all to often. given more time, to determine what the baby had, wouldn’t have changed the outcome due to genetics. However, it would have elevated much of the pain the child had endured through the finial days.I didn’t always agree with the behavior of the characters. However, you will have to read the story and decide for yourself. Not being in the situation, such as that I’m not sure where my mind would have been. However, the only truth about life in general, is that death will happen. As the humans have a 100% mortality rate. It’s just a matter of who joined you on your journey from life to death. Also, funerals are much like weddings, they are always important, to the people involved but hardly important, to many of the people we feel are our friends. The moral of the story could be a multitude of items, but my take away from the story is regardless of the hand your are dealt keep an open mind and there is no telling what will happen. After losing your first child, then a second the ending leaves it open for resilientes that may lead to exactly what she was looking for in the beginning.

About the Author

Angel Knox has spent the past several years on a journey of faith, growth, and finding out what life is truly all about. Although wanting to write this story right after Hurricane Katrina happened, she realized there were more pieces to the puzzle; ten years later, this work is as it should be-complete. She believes that everyone has a special story, and by sharing and connecting with others, we can begin to heal and find peace and joy in our lives. Somewhat of a “spiritual” nomad, Angel hails from Folsom, California, but has spent her adult years in New Orleans, Louisiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; and now in Sacramento, California. She is recently married, and she and her husband plan to continue writing and growing their family.

A Colorful Story of Overcoming Adversity through Faith and Perserverance By MJM I pre-ordered my copy but when it came I was in the middle of studying for a licensing exam. I didn't really have time to read it so I sat the book on a table in anticipation of reading it after the test. A few days later I was taking a break from studying and decided to pick it up and just flip through a few pages. Well, by the next day, I had read the entire book! The story is a classic account of triumph and victory in the face of adversity, colorfully written. It is definitely an engaging read. If you are a Christian, you will admire the heart of this young woman and the foundation of faith that kept her strong. But even if you are not, you will nevertheless appreciate her strength and perseverance.

As a teenager, Dion McTavish was a nerd. Smart, quiet, and scrawny, he surrounded himself with video games and books. He didn't drink or try drugs and he definitely did not party. But something happened when he got to the University of Florida. He began to work out. Soon, his new physique and a chance visit to a lingerie shop led him to a profession he'd never considered: male stripping. American Stripper tells the story of Dion's personal and professional growth as a stripper and as a young man navigating a new world of debauched parties, drunk sorority girls, swingers, jealous boyfriends, and male revues. Come along as he acquires a highly prized cop uniform, has his first threesome, and falls in love--all while pursuing his original dream, to become an English teacher abroad. Vivid, thoughtful, and hilarious, American Stripper is a candid account of the transformation of an ordinary boy into a hunky, world traveling young man who knows how to balance business with pleasure.

Dion takes the reader on a journey as he transforms himself from a self-proclaimed nerd to a successful male performer. I found this book extremely well written and thorough not to mention very fun to read. Real life "Magic Mike" behind the scenes. Great job Dion!

Almost exactly what I was looking for By kh2ff7 I kind of wish there had been two versions of this book, because it has two main audiences that perhaps overlap in some cases, but definitely not all. One set of readers are those who are simply interested in learning about what it's like to be a male stripper; another set of readers are those who are titillated by the material and want to read the book for potential porn and opportunities to fantasize. I fall into the former category, but definitely not the latter.I read the book for research, and was surprised, given how easy it is to find memoirs about female exotic dancing, that McTavish's book and blog were the only useful sources I could find on male exotic dancing. (There are significant differences between the experiences of female and male strippers, and the distinguishing characteristics were important for my research.) For my purposes, this book worked well; it gave me that firsthand account of the lifestyle I was looking for, and was also well-written enough that it would have been an interesting story just to read for fun. I was also glad that it was written by someone who takes his job seriously rather than someone who's just gloating and bragging. I wanted to read a reliable narrative, not something written by an immature, egotistic idiot; McTavish's book is luckily the former.Of the two criticisms I have, one is a matter of preference, and the other is technical. Although the majority of the book was exactly what I needed, there _were_ a few scenes of graphically-described sexual acts which I felt were gratuitous and unnecessary. It lowered the quality of the memoir and detracted from what I found valuable about the story. The other criticism I have is that McTavish needs a better copy editor - there were many small, easily-fixable mistakes that could have been caught by a sharper-eyed proofreader. There weren't any misspelled words or anything, but there were some missing words in a few sentences, and other words that had been accidentally substituted by similar-sounding incorrect words. I could have overlooked just one or two of these errors, but it kept happening often enough to annoy me.Other than those technical errors, the book was written pretty well; McTavish does have an engaging writing style. It's also good to see someone with such a good understanding of what it takes to be successful in his career: that it requires consistent responsibility, respect for customers, developing and marketing the product, taking good care of one's body, and planning for the future (exotic dancing is obviously not going to be a lifelong career option). Most of McTavish's attitude and strategies regarding his career could actually be applied generally, they're not just limited to this particular job.So to summarize, the book was overall likeable and useful, but I wish it didn't have those gratuitously graphic sexual descriptions and had been edited better on a technical level.

If you're curious about the world of male stripping, or just want to hear some wild stories about what happens when people shed their inhibitions, this is definitely worth reading.

The Duke of Dorset is having a very bad day. One moment he is enjoying life as a single man in possession of the most beautiful mistress in London, and the next he finds that he has inherited the guardianship of two orphaned cousins; daughters of his black sheep uncle, the Earl of Shrewsbury. These very young, very troublesome country cousins arrive as a package deal, along with their older half-sister, Miss Sophia Preston. She is a feisty, opinionated young woman of marriageable age—a stepdaughter to the deceased earl, in fact, who is determined to return her family to the countryside where they belong. Sparks fly as Miss Sophia clashes not only with the duke, a thirty-year-old confirmed bachelor, but also with the duke’s mother, a grande dame in London society. The duchess has little patience with two small, difficult and noisy girls, and even less with their unrefined and yet outspoken country mouse of a half sister. Still, all the heat and friction produced between those three is nothing compared to the firestorm that ensues when the duke's mistress, a courtesan of the very highest rank and quite full of herself, discovers that the duke is beginning to see Miss Sophia in an entirely different and quite romantic light...

A very good book By charlie Don't miss this book, it is a great romance with spanking and a mystery and a really bad person who is insanely after so many people that this person needs to be stopped. I love the the children in this book, I laughed and the interaction with the family members was really fun. Must read this book.

FROM COUNTRY MISS TO DUCHESS By Redrabbitt I loved this story and was laughing out loud at some of the antics, especially the presentation to the Queen. This story is jam packed full of mystery, suspense, blackmail, kidnapping, secrets, and loyalty. Miss Sophia Preston was content living and raising her two half sisters in the country where they lived. Griffin, the Duke of Dorset, was enjoying the bachelor life, his mistress and being carefree. Finding out his late Uncle had two daughters and he was named their guardian was definitely not in his plans, and to find they had a half-sister that is grown, even more a shock. The plot of this story is full of intrigue, mystery, and blackmail. Throw in a deranged mistress and things get even more interesting. Sophia is not the demure lady of the ton and has so much spunk that you can’t help but love her, she and the Dowager Duchess sure can but heads. The dialog is humorous and many scenes are entertaining. The chemistry between Griffin and Sophia is explosive and the spankings are steamy. This story ends with a nice HEA ending.

True Love Conquers All By Nonni Sophia Preston is a young woman who has dedicated herself to raising her two half-sisters, swearing that she would never marry if she had to be separated from the small girls. The Duke of Dorset, Griffin, is a man who has sworn he won't marry for as long as possible. When he discovers that he is now the ward of the two young girls as well as is responsible for their sister, he isn't pleased. His mother, is even less pleased to have to house the off-spring of her disgraced brother who disowned his own family when they would not accept the fact that he had the gall to marry well beneath his station. Throw a disgruntled mistress into the mix and you have a book that is full of twists and turns that keeps your attention.

It was a normal Halloween. Two little zombies were coming up the walk, ready to beg for candy and make empty threats. Their mother, looking like a witch dressed for a Playboy spread, waited outside the gate on the walk. But then it became a very abnormal Halloween, when a mob came around the corner headed our way. They were tearing up everything and raising ... well ... hell. I had to take the witch and her two zombies inside with me, right? I mean it was for their own safety. And when the mob burned their house to the ground, they had to have someplace to stay, right? And it would only be for a little while, just until she could get her feet back on the ground. Or so we thought. Turned out differently. Both she and her little zombies got under my skin. Astonishingly ... I got under theirs too. And not in a creepy Halloween kind of way, either.

By Al Gregory Pretty interesting story crafted by Lubrican that included an older man with many unique and lucrative talents interfacing with a 'drop-dead' gorgeous lady with two small children needing desperate help. Our intrepid hero - Bob - of course, comes to the rescue and makes our threatened lady and children safe beyond their wildest dreams and ends up falling in love in the process. Very scintillating and exciting story that builds in momentum to a satisfying conclusion. Well worth the read!

Lubrican always begins with a good story, then "spices" it up with some sex By Kindle Customer Lubrican always begins with a good story, then "spices" it up with some sex. It is not gratuitous, and he is VERY respective of the women. No violence, no forced sex (rape) and male characters that truly love the women they are engaging. He does think that all women should be pregnant, but not to the extent that it hurts the story.

Memory Cards is a journey down a dusty rural road, but also back in time to where as late as the 1980s, neighbors still used mules for transportation and outhouses for other necessities. There is plenty to see, hear and smell, from the oppressive heat and pungent smell of row upon row of tobacco, to the mobile library that brought air conditioning and the aroma of paper, glue and binding each week of the summer. The author grew up in a functional family, but with different interests than his siblings, particularly ones that offered unknown prospects. As the road from the farm widens, readers encounter firebrand preachers, snake-handling churches, guns, baseball, Baptists, Coca-Cola, Elvis, suicides, mysterious deaths, PTSD, houses inhabited by haints, pork barbecue, tea cookies, cornbread, fishing, arrowheads, ice hockey and basketball.

The author is so sincere and honest about his "growing up" years, and of his life today. I enjoyed the stories he told about his family and people who live now or had lived in the past in rural Nash County. I could relate, as I was the youngest child (adopted at 6 mos) to a widow who's baby was eighteen years older than me. Having grown up in Nash County, this book brought back childhood memories of my own, and of people I had long forgotten. Well done, Michael K Brantley! I look forward to your next book!

Richly woven stories of the rural south By Guerrillagirl01 The richly woven stories that make up Michael Brantley’s “Memory Cards” move through his upbringing in the rural south, surrounded by family and faith, to his recently embraced life as a writer. The presence of strong women dominate the stories – Granny, Mama and eventually his wife, Kristi, all influence and advance his understanding of life, most of the time in quiet, subtle ways. Brantley has a flair for descriptive passages, especially recalling the food of his youth – toasted pimento cheese sandwiches, a glass of 7up over crushed ice, and the warm and buttery tea cookies that his Granny baked. There is plenty of time devoted to the encounters of being the youngest male in the household, from coming to grips with his veteran fathers PTSD to the passed down family tradition of responsible gun ownership. I especially fell deep into Brantley’s childhood stories – his unforgettable excursion to Six Gun Territory amusement park and the Mickey Mouse ears he never got.

Never too long or too slow, this book clips along at the perfect pace and has a little bit of something for everyone. A memoir that both talks about sensitive and personal topics as well as a book that shows what a humorous essayist Brantley can be, the tone of the narrator throughout the book is approachable. Defying stereotypes brought to mind when "southern literature" is mentioned, Brantley is both proud of his upbringing and unafraid to differ from the norm (so what if he never shoots an animal again?)I applaud the work that went into crafting such a memoir and feel that each word used in this book is just right.

This volume of Reiner Stach's acclaimed and definitive biography of Franz Kafka tells the story of the final years of the writer's life, from 1916 to 1924--a period during which the world Kafka had known came to an end. Stach's riveting narrative, which reflects the latest findings about Kafka's life and works, draws readers in with nearly cinematic precision, zooming in for extreme close-ups of Kafka's personal life, then pulling back for panoramic shots of a wider world blighted by World War I, disease, and inflation.

In these years, Kafka was spared military service at the front, yet his work as a civil servant brought him into chilling proximity with its grim realities. He was witness to unspeakable misery, lost the financial security he had been counting on to lead the life of a writer, and remained captive for years in his hometown of Prague. The outbreak of tuberculosis and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire constituted a double shock for Kafka, and made him agonizingly aware of his increasing rootlessness. He began to pose broader existential questions, and his writing grew terser and more reflective, from the parable-like Country Doctor stories and A Hunger Artist to The Castle.

A door seemed to open in the form of a passionate relationship with the Czech journalist Milena Jesenská. But the romance was unfulfilled and Kafka, an incurably ill German Jew with a Czech passport, continued to suffer. However, his predicament only sharpened his perceptiveness, and the final period of his life became the years of insight.

Kafka: The Years of Insight, by Reiner Stach

From Booklist *Starred Review* Kafka summed up his life this way: “I have powerfully absorbed the negative element of the age.” In this final volume of his definitive biography, Stach unfolds the life process through which a mature Kafka absorbs that nightmarish negativity and distills it as literature. Readers see up close how Kafka absorbs domestic negativity in a family dominated by a tyrannical father. Readers also watch as Kafka absorbs the emotional negativity of repeated romantic failure. Even Kafka’s physical body attracts negativity, as a man already suffering from lethal tuberculosis contracts the Spanish Flu of 1918. But Stach contextualizes all of the negativity afflicting Kafka personally within the worldwide negativity of a war tearing apart traditional political and cultural structures, so loosing new ethnic animosities, exposing Jews such as Kafka to peril. With impressive insight into imaginative artistry, Stach illuminates the way Kafka responds to personal trauma and global firestorm, sometimes incorporating his negative circumstances into his fiction, but sometimes transcending those circumstances in metaphysical creations informed by a profoundly personal myth. This literary-biographical analysis will help scholars penetrate major Kafka works, including The Castle and The Trial, “The Hunger Artist” and “The Burrow.” Thanks to a lucid translation, English-speaking readers can now share the German enthusiasm for this masterful portrait. --Bryce Christensen

Despite the narrow time frame, this insightful book is likely to become a standard by which future biographies are measured."--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)"[S]uperbly tempered. . . . [T]hrough this robustly determined unearthing he rescues Kafka from the unearthliness of his repute. . . . Shelley Frisch, Stach's heroic American translator, movingly reproduces his intended breadth and pace and tone. . . . In this honest and honorable biography there is no trace of the Kafkaesque; but in it you may find a crystal granule of the Kafka who was."--Cynthia Ozick, New Republic"Stach's book succeeds brilliantly at clearing a path through the thick metaphysical fog that has hung about Kafka's work almost since his death. . . . [I]lluminating. . . . It is common to say of biography that it sends you back to the work. Stach's book does this in spades, but, importantly for English readers, it also presents new aspects of the work in Shelley Frisch's superb and lucid translations. . . . Between them, she and Stach have produced a superbly fresh imaginative guide to the strange, clear, metaphor-free world of Kafka's prose."--Tim Martin, Telegraph"Stach reads the work and the life with minute care and sympathy. It is quite splendid."--Kevin Jackson, Literary Review"No one will ever be able to write Kafka's story as well as he could, but Reiner Stach, a first-class German scholar, does remarkably well in Kafka: The Years of Insight."--Robert Fulford, National Post"The second volume of Reiner Stach's epic biography of Franz Kafka . . . [is] a tangle of counter-grained and often under-sourced life stories, but reading Stach's magnificent narrative (wonderfully translated by Shelley Frisch) straight through brings death, not life, to the forefront. Stach is a compulsively readable writer. . . . [A]s in the previous volume, the prose in The Years of Insight is supple and very appealingly complex--all of which, once again, is perfectly rendered by Frisch."--Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly"[H]ighly readable."--Ian Thomson, Financial Times"[M]onumental. . . . [A] superb English-language translation by Shelly Frisch . . . now reprinted in a handsome paperback by Princeton. . . . In this first volume, Stach sifts through that rubble with huge amounts of energy and discretion (and Frisch follows him without a misstep; it feels like exactly the book I read ten years ago in its original language). . . . His letters and journals are marshaled with sometimes breathtaking ingenuity, and the sheer scope of the work allows Stach to be expansive when painting his backgrounds. . . . Always in these recountings, Stach is searching for his elusive subject, trying--as all previous biographers have tried, though none so well--to hear Kafka's strange, singular voice in the noise. . . . Kafka: The Decisive Years was greeted with a loud chorus of praise when it first appeared in English, and the passage of almost a decade has cast no doubt on that verdict. Princeton has re-issued this classic so that it can stand next to the following volume, Kafka: The Years of Insight, newly published in hardcover. No one interested in Kafka (or, by almost inevitable extension, 20th century literature) should miss either."--Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly"A definitive biography of a rare writer. . . . [M]asterful. . . . [T]his biography makes for an excellent read. Mr Stach, a German academic, expertly presents Kafka's struggles with his work and health against a wider background of the first world war, the birth of Czechoslovakia and the hyperinflation of the 1920s."--The Economist"A definitive biography of a writer as transcendent as Franz Kafka might be unattainable, but in his massive trilogy, Stach comes as close as one can."--Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs"[A] further passionate attempt to reinscribe works such as Metamorphosis, A Report To An Academy, and The Castle on 21st century readers. . . . Stach does us a great service. . . . By dint of a rhythmic sequencing of narration and discussion, Stach illuminates the symbiosis of Kafka's inner catastrophes and vocational ardour with the violent military devastation of Europe, the birth of the Czech Republic and his frail body's tortuous decline."--Gregory Day, The AgePraise for Kafka: The Years of Insight: "It would be impossible to describe the work and essence of this key artist of the twentieth century in a livelier and more vibrant style. . . . A masterpiece of the art of interpretation and of empathy."--Der TagesspiegelPraise for Kafka: The Years of Insight: "Reiner Stach has recounted Kafka's life more vividly than any other biographer. The reader moves through his Kafka biography, which reads like a novel, in breathless anticipation. . . . No one has written about Kafka as suggestively and insightfully, and in such a beautiful and clear language, as Reiner Stach."--Ulrich Greiner, Die Zeit"[E]xtensive . . . impeccably translated. . . . Each volume is crafted such that one simply must read the other two: Stach peppers his writing with tantalizingly vague references and foreshadowings to elsewhere in the series, and his allusions compel the reader to absorb Kafka's complete biography from start to finish. . . . The author's meticulous chronicle of Kafka's life by no means precludes examination of the literary legacy that it produced; rather, it sharpens our understanding of some of Kafka's most obscure and abstract works. . . . An utterly thorough biography, the three-volume set will prove a treasure to any admirer of Franz Kafka--or good research."--Nat Bernstein, Jewish Book Council"Kafka: The Years of Insight . . . wonderfully translated . . . is Volume III of what will surely be the definitive biography. Kafka is brought to vivid life by an author at once scholarly and entertaining."--John Banville, New Statesman"Stach's declared aim is to find out what it felt like to be Kafka, and he succeeds."--John Banville, Irish Times"Countering the prevailing notion that Kafka was out of touch with reality, Stach details how this quixotic modernist was actually well informed about the crisis and how this knowledge altered the course of his writing. In addition to being a skillful biographer, Stach is an authority on Kafka, having worked for more than a decade on the definitive critical edition of Kafka's writings. . . . [T]his biography is an extraordinary accomplishment."--Choice"Stach's riveting narrative, which reflects the latest findings about Kafka's life and works, draws readers in with a nearly cinematic power, zooming in for extreme close-ups of Kafka's personal life, then pulling back for panoramic shots of a wider world."--World Book Industry"Reiner Stach's biography of Franz Kafka, planned for three volumes, has assumed a commanding position in a crowded field: this is a work that simply must be studied by anyone with a serious interest in Kafka. . . . The appearance in English of this groundbreaking work is a publishing event of major importance."--Peter Zusi, Slavic Review"Stach pursues what can be known of Kafka so far and so exhaustively. . . . Sometimes I thought of Stach as the captive and Kafka as the captor. . . . Vivid and valuable."--Rivka Galchen"Masterly . . . Stach's great achievement is to place the literary work into a biographical context that emphasises the interplay of memory, experience and symbolism in the writing. . . . A triumph of biography and literary scholarship."--PD Smith, Guardian"[A] brilliant, authoritative portrait."--John Yargo, The Millions

From the Back Cover

"Stach's plentiful virtues include his vivid social and historical panoramas, especially of the years of war, epidemics, and inflation; his narrative brio (the greatest part of the book is riveting); and his indefatigable scholarship, providing access to unpublished letters of signal importance."--Stanley Corngold, author of Lambent Traces: Franz Kafka

"Enlightening, readable, and convincing, this is a major addition to our understanding of Kafka's life. Stach has a connection to and familiarity with his subject that no other biographer can match. He gives us a real understanding of the ground from which Kafka's writings emerged--what he was reading, which lectures and concerts he was attending, who he was talking with and writing to, and what he was saying to himself when he was writing. Closer we cannot get. And Shelley Frisch's translation is a marvel--accurate, fresh, and elegant."--Mark Anderson, author of Reading Kafka and Kafka's Clothes.

It should reflect the best scholarship on the subject. No one could question Reiner Stach's knowledge of Kafka's life, or his obsessive research into every element of the author's work, habits, relationships, and fears. You really can't get more thorough than this.2. It should be entertaining. Stach's language, courtesy of a masterful translation by Shelley Frisch, is playful but to the point. He strikes just the right balance between excerpted primary source material, storytelling, and analysis. It's a fun read the whole way through.3. It should tell a bigger story. This volume focuses primarily on Kafka's life and work -- but it also tells the story of the Czech experience in World War I, the competing schools of Jewish thought and Zionism, the (unimpressive) state of medicine in early 20th-century Europe, the shifting publishing landscape, etc., etc. Without getting overly discursive, the book teaches the reader about Kafka foremost, yes, but also about the time and place in which he lived. There are not many biographers who can accomplish all three of these things. Robert Caro is one. David McCullough is another. And when his Kafka trilogy is complete, Stach will have made a strong case for joining their ranks.

Bless Me Father For They Have Sinned is a must read for anyone who wants to catch a more intimate look at the infrastructure of the Catholic Church. Father Paul Roberts offers us a historically relevant, yet compassionate and humorous, account of the inner workings of the oldest corporation in the world. This memoir introduces us to a man's life journey, from childhood, through the preparations for the seminary, the pitfalls on the spiritual path, to his maturation and commitment to entering the ancient order of priests. Bless Me Father For They Have Sinned does not shy away from the day-to-day encounters with sensual temptations, boundary violations, and alcohol abuse. The reader has a ringside seat as these men and women grapple with mental health issues, struggle with questioning power structures, instigate changes to training and rehabilitation protocols, and try to bring their venerable church into alignment with a contemporary modus operandi.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A courageous priest's shivering details about what he witnessed during his career as a priest By Walt Armijo This is a one of the best books I have read in the last 10 years. A compelling and intricate view of the teachings of the Catholic Church as well as shocking detail conducted by some priests in an environment that should have protected our children. Father Paul Roberts gives an astonishing amount of detail that will send shivers down your back knowing that the institution he took vows from failed in so many ways to protect ALL of its children. This book will also show you how a very courageous man stood before his peers and the institution to fight for what was right as well as the many obstacles he faced throughout his tenure as a priest. It's a book that will make you really think, laugh, cry and even make you mad. Well written, compelling reading AND a book that you will have difficulty putting down until the END.

I am grateful that this special man is still amongst us counseling, encouraging and healing the difficult issues humanity faces - especially those who have experienced the Catholic church first-hand.

It truly reflects the struggles we as young women go through in life and it has strongly encourage me to never give up and a reminder that my Heavenly Father is ALWAYS here.... Go get yours now----Lisa

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Book Is A Most Read!!!! By Chester Bristol I love this book!!!!! Although it was written mainly for women, I was a little curious and had a read and I most say it was very interested from beginning all the way to the end. I especially liked her humor throughout the entire book, she was real and straight up about many things, also the way she used Bible Verses to bring forward her message and this might be my favorite part of it her 'Dear Diary' summary at the end of each chapter. I would therefore advice both male and female Christian or non Christian to have a read of the book. Trust me when I tell you it'll be a blessing to your life. It has teached me new things as well as reinforced my believes on how our relationships should be with our Heavenly Father and our partners.I've read from cover to cover and I most say Congratulations Shaniqua. May God continue to Bless you, may he also grant you the wisdom and understanding that you need so your life may continue to be a testimony to change many lifes for the greater good.God Bless Sis

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. As the author stated in her book "Brokenness doesn't mean that it's over; broken crayons can still color." By Rachel Austin #DiaryofaGirl is just as the name suggests; it is a diary of the author's life and all that she has been through. I like that she is open and honest about her life and she is also very humorous. Reading the book really made me laugh. But what I love most about this book is the way she makes reference to scripture and shows us how God had a plan for her life and how He was fighting for her even when she didn't realize it.It encourages you to continue to hold on and put your trust in God no matter what you have been through or going through. God has a divine plan for our lives and He has placed us here for a purpose. As the author stated in her book "Brokenness doesn't mean that it's over; broken crayons can still color."I pray that each and every individual who reads this book will be blessed and encouraged. Get your copy and you won't be disappointed.
