As a teenager, Dion McTavish was a nerd. Smart, quiet, and scrawny, he surrounded himself with video games and books. He didn't drink or try drugs and he definitely did not party. But something happened when he got to the University of Florida. He began to work out. Soon, his new physique and a chance visit to a lingerie shop led him to a profession he'd never considered: male stripping. American Stripper tells the story of Dion's personal and professional growth as a stripper and as a young man navigating a new world of debauched parties, drunk sorority girls, swingers, jealous boyfriends, and male revues. Come along as he acquires a highly prized cop uniform, has his first threesome, and falls in love--all while pursuing his original dream, to become an English teacher abroad. Vivid, thoughtful, and hilarious, American Stripper is a candid account of the transformation of an ordinary boy into a hunky, world traveling young man who knows how to balance business with pleasure.

Dion takes the reader on a journey as he transforms himself from a self-proclaimed nerd to a successful male performer. I found this book extremely well written and thorough not to mention very fun to read. Real life "Magic Mike" behind the scenes. Great job Dion!

Almost exactly what I was looking for By kh2ff7 I kind of wish there had been two versions of this book, because it has two main audiences that perhaps overlap in some cases, but definitely not all. One set of readers are those who are simply interested in learning about what it's like to be a male stripper; another set of readers are those who are titillated by the material and want to read the book for potential porn and opportunities to fantasize. I fall into the former category, but definitely not the latter.I read the book for research, and was surprised, given how easy it is to find memoirs about female exotic dancing, that McTavish's book and blog were the only useful sources I could find on male exotic dancing. (There are significant differences between the experiences of female and male strippers, and the distinguishing characteristics were important for my research.) For my purposes, this book worked well; it gave me that firsthand account of the lifestyle I was looking for, and was also well-written enough that it would have been an interesting story just to read for fun. I was also glad that it was written by someone who takes his job seriously rather than someone who's just gloating and bragging. I wanted to read a reliable narrative, not something written by an immature, egotistic idiot; McTavish's book is luckily the former.Of the two criticisms I have, one is a matter of preference, and the other is technical. Although the majority of the book was exactly what I needed, there _were_ a few scenes of graphically-described sexual acts which I felt were gratuitous and unnecessary. It lowered the quality of the memoir and detracted from what I found valuable about the story. The other criticism I have is that McTavish needs a better copy editor - there were many small, easily-fixable mistakes that could have been caught by a sharper-eyed proofreader. There weren't any misspelled words or anything, but there were some missing words in a few sentences, and other words that had been accidentally substituted by similar-sounding incorrect words. I could have overlooked just one or two of these errors, but it kept happening often enough to annoy me.Other than those technical errors, the book was written pretty well; McTavish does have an engaging writing style. It's also good to see someone with such a good understanding of what it takes to be successful in his career: that it requires consistent responsibility, respect for customers, developing and marketing the product, taking good care of one's body, and planning for the future (exotic dancing is obviously not going to be a lifelong career option). Most of McTavish's attitude and strategies regarding his career could actually be applied generally, they're not just limited to this particular job.So to summarize, the book was overall likeable and useful, but I wish it didn't have those gratuitously graphic sexual descriptions and had been edited better on a technical level.
