1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing story - loved it! By Michelle Small I have just finished reading this book and have to say it is an amazing story. I was captivated by the story and moved with deep emotion when I read about the suffering of Steven and Fred's families and the hardships both men encountered in their journey to survive the war and seek out a better life after the war. But it wasn't just the story - it was the descriptive way Cheryl Koenig brought their characters to life. I fell in love with Anna and Katarina, such selfless women whose devotion to family and strength in adversity were inspirational.Cheryl is a gifted writer and her ability to re-tell Fred and Steven's history in a manner that was so interesting made it hard to put down until the final page. In fact I felt very emotional when I had finished....it was hard to explain. Maybe it's knowing that the characters were real people which made it a more personal experience for me, but I think there will be others who will read this book and feel the same.

Cornucopia From One Suitcase By Alex Soong This is a family history told in novelistic form; what it lacks in authenticity it makes up in sheer readability. The early history of Frici and Istvan is set against a backdrop of the most dramatic events in recent European history: the Nazi persecution of Jews, the theatre of World War 2 and the communist takeover of Eastern Europe. All the ingredients are present for a gripping tale: survival hanging by a thread of cunning, the anxiety of mothers, the horror of a Soviet gulag and the displacement of populations that brought the major characters halfway across the world to Australia where, naturally, life became more mundane and suburban. Yet we keep on reading because we care about these persons who are portrayed in all their strengths and human frailties, much to the credit of the author who has resisted whitewashing her family history. This is also a tale about immigrants putting down successful roots through hard work and enterprise, it's about how someone you pass on the street could have the most amazing memories of life and times so different and so faraway that it seems inconceivable that they could be here at all.
