Nettie Herskovitz was wealthy and widowed. Her suitor, Harry Diamond, was a dashing young bootlegger a decade and a half her junior. At first she resisted his advances, but soon the two were married with an infant daughter. Disinterested in a domestic life, Diamond shot Nettie on Valentines Day 1923 while riding in their Hudson sedan. He tried to pin the crime on the fleeing chauffeur, but Diamond made a mistake. Though mortally wounded, Nettie lived long enough to identify her attacker to police and change her will. The sensational Diamond murder became tabloid foddera Roaring Twenties story of roadhouse floozies, illegal booze, orphaned children, trust funds and legal acrobatics.

By tom d gumm I guess the story itself was OK but why instead of pictures of Nettie and her husband Sam she inserts pictures of (I guess) her relatives on pages 86 and 87? there are NO pictures of the murdered woman(Hettie) in the entire book----and why the pictures of her relatives??!!!

An absolutely fascinating true crime story that is brought alive by excerpts from newspapers and photos of the day. I especially loved to read archaic terms that have long gone out of common usage such as "check raising" and "jail delivery". Great read!

The book not only gives full report of the murder and the people involved in the subsequent trial and execution but she gives a good description of the times and character of the community in which it took place. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this volume. My only suggestion would be that the author include a genealogy chart or intial listing of Nettie's various marriages and children and how they are linked (or not linked) together at the beginning of the book for the reader's reference. Nettie had a complicated life and was an unusual woman for her day and age and her strengths and intelligence were demonstrated in her children's subsequent lives even though she left them orphans at young ages.
