By Alec Hastings Apparently, a small-town newspaper editor--especially one of Mr. Drysdale's stripe!--has a lot of interesting adventures while reporting on the lives of his fellow citizens. I've been enjoying Vermont Moments a great deal. I chuckled as Mr. Drysdale described his experience as a "co-pilot" to one of the Green Mountain Boys flying an F-4D Phantom jet for the Vermont Air Guard. I chuckled again when Ken Marchuk said, "Oh, rats!" as his hot-air balloon headed for a landing in a farm pond--part of another co-pilot experience for Mr. Drysdale. I got something in my eye, and it started to water a little when I read his letter honoring a late friend named Driscoll Reid. I'm not finished with the book. One thing I like about it is that I can read it a little bit at a time, kind of the way I savor sweets now that I'm getting on in years and trying to leave a few cookies for tomorrow instead of eating them all at once. I see now that an editor gets a special view of his neighbors and their goings-on. If you want to learn a little more about Vermont--the real Vermont, not the Vermont of glossy brochures and magazine covers--take a look from Mr. Drysdale's point of view. You'll smile, wonder, and put your chin in your hand for a moment to daydream about what might be happening right now in those green hills west of the Connecticut River.

Filled with stories, letters, and recollections of adventures with individuals of generous and admirable spirits, it is a tribute to both inspiring people and the place that cultivates them. Vermont's muse comes through on every page. It is a privilege to read these stories spanning dozens of years of Drysdale's editorials at his beloved newspaper, The Herald of Randolph. If you have ever cherished a place on the globe with awe and curiosity, you will love this little book.
