MAKING THE ROUNDS: Memoirs of a Small-Town Doctor, by Dr. Gerald L. Miller, Shari Miller Wagner

From the Back Cover "Small-town doctors have gone the way of small towns since Gerald Miller and Lee Kinzer set up practice in tiny Markle, Indiana in the 1960s. The technological advances that have so aggrandized medicine have exacted their cost, not just in dollars, but in human intimacy, in community. And those are not the stuff of nostalgia; they are health issues. Miller, in his second collaborative book with distinguished poet daughter Shari Wagner, guides us on a journey back to the heartwarming and heartbreaking time of $4 office visits, middle-of-the-night house calls and reliance on wits over widgets, all the while deflecting credit from an author who nevertheless emerges, like his late colleague, as nothing short of heroic. Making the Rounds is a gem--as a history lesson, elegy to loss, adventure series, and simple reminder: The physician can have no greater skills than listening and belonging."--Dan Carpenter, former Indianapolis Star columnist and author of Indiana Out Loud: Dan Carpenter on the Heartland Beat

About the Author Dr. Gerald L. Miller is also the author of "A Hundred Camels: A Mission Doctor's Sojourn and Murder Trial in Somalia." He is a family physician who worked for forty-two years in a rural Indiana community before retiring from the Markle Medical Center in 2006.     Shari Wagner teaches poetry and memoir writing for the Indiana Writers Center. She is the author and editor of five books and has had her work appear in The Writers Almanac with Garrison Keillor, Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry, North American Review, Shenandoah, and The Christian Century.

By Twylla Bell This book was written about a doctor's experience in the small northeastern Indiana town of Markle that I knew well in my youth. I moved to Texas over 32 years ago at the age of 20, but loved reading each chapter's compelling theme.Anyone from a small midwestern town or that would like to learn about this way of life, will love this story rich in history and community. Dr. Miller peers into his patient's condition with a "finger on the pulse" not only from a literal sense, but from hearing, sensing, interpretation, evaluation and response. He explains why his method to really relate to his patient is important in his profession and you quickly warm up to his humble and likeable personality. It is an entertaining and heartfelt read infused with easy to understand facts in medical conditions, the city's history and leaders.A well written book that I highly recommend!

Just reading a few pages gets the reader hooked. It's one individual doctor's story of beginning a general practice in small town mid-America. However it has a story surely parallel to many doctors taking up practice in the mid-20th century. Imagine an era when a doctor listened to his patient. "MAKING THE ROUNDS" tells of that time, practice extinct in contemporary gigantic corporate health conglomerate world. It was a time of doctor/patient relationships. Now it's corporate/insurance relationships and the patient is just the common denominator. This story told by Dr. Miller and his daughter, offers an inside look at the heartache, humor, suspense, fears, burdens, financial issues, family, and more that pertain to beginning a medical practice before the laptop and government supervised procedures. The Doc's emotions are revealed with every new event. It's a way of the past, on the endangered list, at best.Small town stories are rich in warmth.Doc Miller provides an abundance of anecdotes to inspire the medical profession, encourage the poorest patient, and bring a rash of smiles to every reader, any age. This is the best investment readers can make toward self-diagnosed good-read needs. Thanks Doctor, for sharing your tales. Not only has your type of practice been relegated to the ways of the past (not corporate efficient), but the medical past needs this personal physician touch documented for historical preservation.

A doctor who listened with patience By John Bender The town of Markle’s history, geography and even its demographics take endearing shape in this doctor’s memoir. Gerald Miller tells engaging stories about establishing a practice, with another newly-graduated colleague, in an Indiana town without a doctor, a practice that grew into a medical clinic of 10 doctors. The story is interwoven with his and his family’s immersion in community, church, schools, social life, health promotion via various media, a term of service in Somalia and the clinic’s involvement in providing health care in Haiti in cooperation with the Findley Ohio-based Churches of God.Miller’s daughter, Shari Wagner, adds sinew, detail and zest to the story. The community, past and present, comes alive as the story unfolds. The authors describe the book as a love letter to the people of Markle and surrounding area, people whose resilience, humor, foibles and wisdom tumble and turn on daily and lifelong rounds of their own.Making the Rounds reveals a doctor and his family’s pride and love for their hometown—a sentiment one senses was wholeheartedly requited.
