Understanding Imagination: The Reason of Images (Studies in History and Philosophy of Science), by Dennis L Sepper

From the Back Cover This book discusses that imagination is as important to thinking and reasoning as it is to making and acting. By reexamining our philosophical and psychological heritage, it traces a framework, a conceptual topology, that underlies the most disparate theories: a framework that presents imagination as founded in the placement of appearances. It shows how this framework was progressively developed by thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, and Kant, and how it is reflected in more recent developments in theorists as different as Peirce, Saussure, Wittgenstein, Benjamin, and Bachelard. The conceptual topology of imagination incorporates logic, mathematics, and science as well as production, play, and art. Recognizing this topology can move us past the confusions to a unifying view of imagination for the future.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Taking images serious By Joseph Avant This book could very well be the most important book that any student of philosophy and or science should own. I say this for the following reason: Plato's Socrates is very clear in the Republic that he is "always greedy for images," and as everyone knows he is most frequently remembered for the most famous of all images in the Western intellectual tradition, namely the image of the cave. The crucial importance of this fact has been forgotten. That is, the taking serious of images has all but disappeared, and the notion of "imagination" has been deflated to the un-seriousness of a mere literary genre mostly intended for children. Thus, the historiography of imagination in the Western intellectual tradition is radically defective. Dennis Sepper's book attempts to correct this lamentable situation and reawaken students to the way in which images and imagination were of fundamental importance for some of the greatest philosophers of the Western intellectual tradition. To state it bluntly, Sepper's book is nothing short of an excavation of the Western intellectual tradition in an attempt to reveal the original wellspring of images and imagination in human cognition.More specifically, from the back cover of the book one reads that "This book argues imagination is as important to thinking and reasoning as it is to making and acting." This statement does not sufficiently get to the core of Sepper's argument in the book. In fact, Sepper quite convincingly argues that it is only through the cognitive use of images that we "think" at all. In other words, images and imagination are not simply "as important to thinking and reasoning as [they are] to making and acting," but rather images and imagination actually undergird and inform our making and acting: images and imagination are, in fact, the critical link between theory and practice that are so inextricably combined within the human psyche. One sees this most clearly in Sepper's treatment of Descartes who is most commonly (and quite mistakenly!) associated with the (mere) "mathematization" of nature and hence modernity. As Sepper observes: "The thesis that modern rationalist-mathematical science has 'disenchanted' the world, but that the disenchantment can somehow be reversed by 'going back' to imagination, is hollow. There is no golden age to go back to, and the proposed remedy is just another symptom of the failure to understand reason, imagination, and their relation" (p.268 n.1).I simply cannot recommend this book enough for all thoughtful persons who are interested in the way that we as thinking beings come to know the world, ourselves, and the way in which the two are related and communicated by us to ourselves and others. Thus, despite the price of the book, it is hoped that many will see it as a small price to pay for something that will reward its reader many times over in the course of one's contemplative and active life...
