Roots and Wings in the 20th Century: A Partnership of Family, Speaking, Writing, and Peace follows two Midwesterners, Harriet and Dean Hopkins, from their years growing up in the 1910s and 1920s and marriage in the 1930s to becoming members of the “long civic generation” from the 1940s until the 1990s. Using their own words from extensive and often reflective letters and diaries, Roots and Wings shows their day-to-day development as individuals and the development of their relationship. Harriet and Dean’s taproots are a farm near Savannah and the college town of Wooster, both in north central Ohio. The third point of the triangle where they lived for more than 50 years is the Lake Erie-bordering city of Cleveland and the suburb of Lakewood. As young people, their wings grew in the 1930s with Dean’s three years at Harvard Law School and Harriet’s western trip. From the 1950s into the 1980s they traveled inside the U.S. and then in other parts of the world -- from Ireland to Nicaragua -- where they listened, shared their values, and made friends. About the Author Frances Hopkins Irwin served as a Peace Corps Volunteer journalist in Kabul, Afghanistan (1964-67). At the Vermont Natural Resources Council, The Conservation Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, and World Resources Institute, she worked as an environmental policy analyst and advocate for four decades. She and her husband, Will Irwin, who met in Kabul, circled back to write The Early Years of Peace Corps in Afghanistan: A Promising Time. Angene Hopkins Wilson was a Peace Corps Volunteer teacher in Liberia (1962-64) and later taught in Sierra Leone and Fiji and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Winneba in Ghana. Professor in the University of Kentucky's College of Education from 1975-2004, she is the author of The Meaning of International Experience for Schools and of Africa on My Mind: Educating Americans for Fifty Years, co-author of Social Studies and the World: Teaching Global Perspectives, and with her husband Jack Wilson co-author of Voices from the Peace Corps: Fifty Years of Kentucky Volunteers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. especially when they document the growing up of a boy and girl who fall in love and spend the rest of their lives together By Ron Byars A novel offers a peek into the lives of fictional characters, but it can be equally intriguing to read the diaries and correspondence of real people, especially when they document the growing up of a boy and girl who fall in love and spend the rest of their lives together. Dean Hopkins and Harriet Painter attended the same high school in Wooster, Ohio—a smallish town leavened by the significant influence of an exceptionally fine liberal arts college. Roots and Wings traces the story of two young people who flourished in that environment, both emotionally and intellectually. Both graduated from The College of Wooster, and Dean earned a law degree from Harvard, becoming a practicing attorney in Cleveland. The story begins in the 1920s and passes through Depression years, wartime, and Cold War. Their lives were devoted to their families and their church, but also to peacemaking, a passionate commitment that didn’t fade with youth, but lasted a lifetime. They raised five children, accepted leadership positions, traveled to places commonly and uncommonly visited (always with peacemaking in mind), spoke and wrote, read widely, and, though registered Republicans, almost always voted for Democrats. I loved this book, and can imagine that many others will love it, too!Ron Byars
